Other journalism contests and fellowships

The International Reporting Project has spent the last 12 years providing opportunities to more than 300 journalists to travel to more than 85 countries to produce award winning stories through two separate Fellowship programs: The IRP Fellowships (deadline: March 1, 2010) and the IRP Gatekeeper Trips (deadline: April 1, 2010).

The American Academy of Religion honors best in-depth reporting on topics related to religion (broadly defined). Three contests: writing at large news outlets, writing at small news outlets, and opinion writing. Winner of each receives $1,000. Articles published in North America during calendar year 2008 are eligible. Entry fee is $25 per contest. Most judges are current or former journalists. Affiliated with Emory University, the AAR is the world’s largest association of academics who research or teach topics related to religion. The AAR neither endorses nor rejects any religious belief or practice. Deadline: February 28, 2009. For contest rules and past winners, please see http://www.aarweb.org/jump/jawards. For questions, please contact Susan Snider, 404-727-4725.

The Taylor Family Award for Fairness in Newspapers encourages fairness in news coverage by daily newspapers in the United States. The application deadline is Jan. 16, 2009. Casey Medals for Meritorious Journalism
Enter the 16th Annual Casey Medals for Meritorious Journalism competition, which recognizes exemplary reporting on children and families. This year, we’ve updated our categories for the digital age: We’ve revamped the audio and video categories, and we welcome Web audio and video entries. For the first time, citizen journalists and reporters from online-only news sites are eligible to apply. First-place winners receive $1,000 and will be honored at a ceremony in  Washington, D.C. Casey Medalists are automatically considered for two additional $5,000 awards presented by the America’s Promise Alliance.

The Journalism Center on Children & Families is a nonprofit training and resource center based at the University of Maryland’s Philip Merrill College of Journalism. Nearly 3,400 journalists have competed for Casey Medals since 1994. The awards are funded by the Annie E. Casey Foundation.

Journalism Fellowships in Child and Family Policy can enrich your understanding, and coverage, of issues such as education, health and well-being, housing, work/family and much more.
